A Quick Product Review
|
As a dealer of digital
proofing and wide format printers for more than a decade we have tested
and sold many different RIP brands. This includes, among others, RIPs
from EFI, Wasatch, ColorBurst, Onyx and Colorbyte.
Like Coloproof, EFI's
next model up in their RIP offerings, EFI Designer offers many quality
RIP features. The hot folders and print queues make delivering jobs to
the RIP a snap. For many Mac users, running the RIP on a MAC and not a
PC is a godsend. With the right printer settings, paper selection and
ICC profiles, Designer can produce some very good color results.
There are expected
tradeoff in less expensive programs and Designer has a few. The biggest
drawback that we have seen so far is that Designer supports a maximum of
720 dpi printing on Epson Printers (the 4000 to be precise.) On some of
the media we would typically use for proofing, this resolution results
in horizontal banding. We are currently working with EFI to get higher
resolution printing enabled.
For the time being- this
may not be your best choice for a Mac based Rip. Keep in touch with us
for the latest.
As with most of the RIPs
we sell, we highly recommend that you purchase installation and
training. |
